16 Avenue North carries the Trans-Canada Highway (Highway 1) through Calgary over 26.5 kilometres, transitioning from a freeway at both ends to a heavily developed six-lane urban boulevard with 21 signal lights through the central portion between Crowchild Trail and Deerfoot Trail. It is the main east-west transcontinental route through the city.
